High Bounce Rate? Your Site May Be To Blame

Do you suffer from a high bounce rate? Are potential buyers landing on a blog post and leaving right away? If so, your website may be to blame. In this post, we will discuss possible reasons for a high bounce rate and what can be done about it.

Wrong keywords attracting the wrong audience – We don’t just want eyeballs on our website. We want buyers. Qualified buyers. How are we getting in front of the right buyer? If we are using wrong keywords, our buyers may still be looking for us. Make sure to do proper keyword research. We also want to make sure that we are truthful with our keyword choices “quality used cars” as a keyword is no good when you sell scooters. Keep keywords accurate. Remember, the keywords are what buyers put into search engines looking for a result. If what you sell is expensive jewelry, make sure you have “luxury” as a keyword and not “bargain” this way you are getting people who can actually afford your product or service in the first place.

No title tags – Title tags are even more important than meta tags, since title tags tell the search engines what your page is about. Give a good description, but don’t go overboard. A bad idea would be to have a title tag that says “home page” for example. Have the title tags accurately reflect what is found on that page, not only making it easier to be indexed, but easier to be found.

Your website is beyond ugly – If you have an ugly website, it will not matter if your company has the best product or service around. No one wants to see an ugly website. What can be done if your website is ugly? Simple. Show friends and co-workers the design as it is in progress. Listen to the feedback. Get feedback from the sales department. If the sales force hates the website, they may have a hard time sending potential buyers there. Check out competing websites to see what you like about them and what you do not like. Talk to the web designer and work on something new.

Your website is slow to load – Your company has a gorgeous website. It is truly a work of art, but all that flash makes your site slow to load. In this day and age, flash is death to websites. It makes a site very slow, and because sites that use a lot of flash most times have heavy graphics, those pages cannot be crawled. Crawlers do not like pictures. They love text. If your website is very slow, maybe it is time to choose the best pictures to highlight and ditch flash. Adding text behind the pictures can help the crawlers learn what is on the pages, so do not forget title tags and keywords.

These are just a few of the reasons your website could have a high bounce rate. What would you add to this list?
