.edu links are some of the rarest links on the Internet. Many SEO Experts believe that .edu links carry extra authority due to their rarity and perceived quality. However, it is important to note that there is some difference in opinion. According to Google's Matt Cutts, government (.gov) and education (.edu) links are not treated any differently in Google's algorithm than any other site's links. He says that a link's value is based solely on the authority of the linking page, regardless of the page's TLDN.
