SEO Search Engine Optimization, SEO, is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic a website receives from search engines. Link building is an aspect of SEO.

Link Building Search rankings are partly determined by the quality and quantity of links to your site. Link building is the process of acquiring backlinks.

Backlink A backlink is a link pointing back to your website. It is often used synonymously with 'link' and 'inbound link.'

Submission Submissions are potential links that require editorial approval before being published. For example, most quality website directories have a 2-4 week approval process.

Citation A citation is a mention of your business. At a minimum, it consists of three items: Name, Address, and Phone. (NAP) Google aggregates a business's citations for their local search rankings.

An example of a citation is your business listing on Yelp.com. Although it does not have a direct link to your website, the mere mention of your business will influence its local search rankings.

Keyword A keyword is a query used when searching. SEO experts can research which keywords your potential customers use to find your service. Your website's rankings for those keywords can be improved through on-page optimization and link building.

Link Value The value of a link can be estimated using industry metrics:

  • PageRank
  • mozTrust
  • Alexa Ranking
  • Domain Authority
  • Social Activity
  • Website Age
  • Google Index Status
  • Each link is also manually inspected:

    • Is the link trusted?
    • Is the link relevant?
    • Is the link valuable?

Anchor Text Anchor text is the text used in a link. Example: <a href="http://google.com">My Anchor!</a>.

In the example above, the link anchor text is: 'My Anchor!' and the target URL is: 'http://www.google.com'.

In previous years, it was common practice to have all your links include your target keywords as the anchor. This is now seen as a violation of Google's Webmaster Guidelines.

Backlink Build uses keywords as the anchor text only when it is appropriate.

Nofollow & Dofollow A link with a rel=nofollow attribute is not followed by search engines. Google generally does not pass SEO benefits to nofollow links. Dofollow is simply a link that does not have the rel=nofollow attribute.

In previous years, it was common practice to focus only on dofollow links. Google's recent algorithm changes now give preference to a natural mixture.

Backlink Build acquires both dofollow and nofollow links.

Reciprocal Link Reciprocal linking is when 2 websites agree to link to each other. Typically referred to as link exchanges, this was once a common SEO practice. Google has since labeled excessive link exchanging as a link scheme and a violation of its Webmaster Guidelines.

Backlink Build does not practice reciprocal linking. All links will be one way.

One Way Link Opposite of a reciprocal link, a one way link is when 1 website links to another without a returning link.

Backlink Build acquires one way links.

Paid Links Paid links are purchased for the purpose of manipulating PageRank.

Backlink Build does not purchase links. We find websites that want to link to you. We create relevant and engaging content to facilitate our link building efforts.

Keyword Stuffing Keyword stuffing is when keywords are overused on a page. Using irrelevant keywords or hidden text may also be considered keyword stuffing and is a violation of Google's Webmaster Guidelines.

    Backlink Build avoids keyword stuffing.

Link Farms Link farms are networks of websites operated for the purpose of Pagerank manipulation.

Backlink Build avoids link farms. We have no association with the websites that we acquire links from since they are considered black hat.

Black Hat Black hat SEO is referred to SEO techniques that violate Google's Webmaster Guidelines. In previous years, SEO experts used automated software and link schemes to quickly achieve top search rankings. Google has since aimed to make these practices obsolete. While some black hat techniques are still effective, the risks of such practices outweigh the benefits.

White hat SEO is the opposite.

White Hat Opposite of black hat SEO, white hat SEO complies with Google's Webmaster Guidelines. White hat SEO can include on-page optimization, creating unique content, and building relevant links.

Backlink Build uses 100% white hat SEO.
